A Paradigm Shift

People -family, teachers, and friends usually consider me as a little girl with high dream, dream on making a paradigm shift. What kind of paradigm shift is that? I'll tell you this.

Handicapped's life always be a pathetic phenomena in life. How the handicapped manage their life with their capabilities grows sadness, compassion, and pity in everyone’s heart. Sometimes, people help the handicapped because of those feelings, without any apretiation or pride of their ability to survive with their capabilities. This paradigm makes the handicapped can’t maximize their potential or actualize it in proper ways. They with their family will always feel be rejected by another people around them. Moreover, we can see that in the job opportunities, there are always low spaces for handicapped. Sometimes they are warned before applying that they won’t included to the job receiver. That’s why most of the handicappedsand family give up on life, feel useless, like there will be no good future for them.
There are outstanding handicappeds who can survive and inspire the world such as the hero of thalidomide victims Louise Medus, wheelchair athlete Anthony Purcell, the priest Nick Vujicic, Hee Ah Lee the four fiengered pianist, and many others. Anthony Steven Christiansen, a handicapped athlete whose book was read by me many years ago stated that although handicapped have some capabilities, they still have many abilities to be developed. This statement inspires me a lot.
How people reject the handicapped, why people can’t realize the handicapped’s potential, why there’s discrimination between the handicapped and the normal people, how the handicapped want to survive, how they are weak and they are strong, are the problems which have been bothering me year by year that I decided to be the provocator of the normal life for the handicapped when I was in the sixth grade of elementary school. This desire is really stamped in my heart that I wrote it on the first page of my Bible, “I wanna be a great PSYCHOLOGIST”. In other words, my goal is when I can help the handicappeds throwing their tears, unsuccedd life, and bad dreams away. And the glory scream will be heard when people have received the handicappeds in society as usefull and talented creations.
My first step is visiting SLBs and Panti Asuhan. I went to some Panti Asuhan in my hometown, Banyuwangi when I was in the sixth grade of elementary school. Then I also went to SLB dormitory when I was in the 9th grade of Junior High School, and I found many talented handicappeds there. Some of them can sing well, play instruments such as piano and drum, and also read Holy Qur’an. When I was in the 11th grade of Senior High School, I visited SLB for the mental disorders. There I learnt how to teach them and how to grow their interest to study. That’s difficult but fun and I enjoyed it so much. My second step is making a research for my KTI of how the handiccapeds develop their talents as their life actualization. Beside, I read many books of the inspiring handicappeds and also books about how to give the handicappeds therapy. My third and biggest step is, focussing myself to a destination, that will be started here, in the Psychology Faculty of Universitas Pelita Harapan.
Someday, I will build a city for the handicappeds. This city contains modern SLB, mall, playing garden, clinic which I will become the counselor, auditorium, and also “a castle of dreams”. I will explain them one by one. Modern SLB means a handicapped school whose the materials and the methods of teaching and learning are modern. It will use multimedia which is set to comfort the handicappeds learning process, of course it is based on everyone’s necessity. There are laboratories, library, gym, and studios to help them studying. There are many kinds of equipments that are suitable with their capabilities.
The mall contains lift for the handicappeds which can be operated by themselves, and also there are wheelchairs or other helping equipments which can be borrowed without any tax, so they can move easilly on those mall. This mall sells goods for the handicappeds. I will colaborate with designers to design clothes for them, so they can wear proper and beautiful clothes that people will appreciate their appearance. I think this method will grow the handicappeds’ confidence. Also there’s supermarket there which sells nutrious foods for their growth. There’s tools shop which sells any equipments for the handicappeds such as electronic wheelchair, stationary, etc. There are barber shop, SPA, cafetaria, petshop, boutique, game station, and many other things that will help them feel a normal life as the normal people have.
Playing garden in my mind is like waterbom, a swimming pool with many kind of slides and also playing garden itself. They will visit this garden not for playing only, but also for their therapy, because I ever read an encyclopedia about handicappeds, that the therapist sometimes use swimming pool to therapy the handicappeds.
In my clinic, there’s always time for them to check their health, and share their problems with me. It can be their health, their feelings, their school, their sexual problems, and all the things they want to say. This clinic will be handled by me because I want to know every handicappeds’ growth both their health and their mental.
The auditorium is a place where they can express their art passion. There are complete instruments, large stage, and acoustic walls. They can make a short play there, having music or dance concert, and also for having some parties. There will be music teachers that will help them in music lesson and there will be a therapist that can give music therapy for them.
The last is a castle of dreams. There will be built a castle where they can imagine theirselves in the future. They can be any profession they want in their future, such as being doctor, nurse, pilot, etc.
In my dream, this city will influence the world a lot and will produce qualified handicappeds that can survive and make a good living and good influence in their society. At last, the handicappeds will change the people’s paradigm about who and how they are ‘till there’s no discrimination for the handicappeds anymore.

That;s the paradigm shift I'm dreaming on :)
